Why a Future Event Already Demands Action in Present

Somewhere in the next decade, a machine will exist that can do something no computer has ever done, i.e., read the world’s secrets. Not by stealing passwords or exploiting software bugs, but by solving the mathematics that our entire digital trust system is built on. Cryptographers have given this moment a name, “Q-Day”, the day a quantum computer becomes powerful enough to break the encryption that currently protects every thing from bank transfers to military orders.
