THE MOZAMBIQUE CHANNEL: FROM ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO RENEWED STRATEGIC SIGNIFICANCE FOR INDIA’S MARITIME INTERESTS AND LITTORAL PARTNERSHIP

Introduction

The Mozambique Channel constitutes one of the three principal western entry points to the Indian Ocean, alongside the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. The concurrent crises at these two northern chokepoints have exposed how vulnerable India’s energy and trade transits are to any disruptions in and around them.  This has created a renewed sense of urgency and focus on the Mozambique Channel, as a significant amount of maritime traffic and trade has been redirected to the longer route through this Channel in the Southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO) and around the Cape of Good Hope. This phenomenon is not new, as is evident through the Red Sea disruption in 2023.
