SOF Survival in Transparent Battlefield

SOF Survival in Transparent Battlefield

Abstract

The proliferation of commercial satellites, unmanned systems, and AI-enabled surveillance has created a transparent battlefield that systematically dismantles the information asymmetry Special Operations Forces have historically depended upon. This paper argues that battlefield transparency represents an existential rather than merely tactical threat to SOF, eroding the foundational conditions of surprise, concealment, and relative superiority that their operational model requires. Through analysis of SOF vulnerabilities across doctrinal, structural, and human dimensions, the paper identifies five interlocking adaptation strategies spanning deception, signature management, organisational restructuring, multidomain operations, and offensive counter-ISR arguing that survival requires their simultaneous application within a broader multi-domain operational framework.
