If we can bring lateral talent into the IAS, why not into the organisations that defend the nation?
In June 2025, the United States Army administered the Oath of Office to four senior technology executives, one each from Palantir, Meta, OpenAI, and Thinking Machines Lab, commissioning them directly as Lieutenant Colonels in the Army Reserve. None had prior military service. They were inducted because the US Army recognised an uncomfortable truth: the wars of the future will be won not just by soldiers with weapons, but by minds that understand artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber warfare, and the architecture of modern data platforms.
